The Power of Positive Thinking: How to Cultivate a Growth Mindset and Achieve Your Goals

12 April 2023

Our thoughts shape our reality. If we think positively, we are more likely to attract positive outcomes. The same is true with the opposite of attracting negative outcomes. This is the power of positive thinking.

Positive thinking can help us cultivate a growth mindset, which can help us achieve our goals.

A growth mindset is the belief that our abilities and intelligence can be developed over time. People with a growth mindset believe that they can improve their skills and talents through hard work and dedication. On the other hand, a fixed mindset is the belief that our abilities and intelligence are predetermined, and we cannot improve them. People with a fixed mindset tend to avoid challenges and give up easily.

Worries and anxieties are a natural part of live. They even have a place in regards to keeping ourselves and our families safe. However, they can quickly and easily overcome us if we don't pay attention to our brain functioning and overall mental health.

Worry is like a rocking chair, it'll give you something to do but won't get you very far.

Positivity is a learned behavior. It requires us to reframe the interpretation of current data.

Shad Helmstetter is a renowned author and speaker in the field of personal growth and self-improvement. He has written extensively on the topic of positivity and self-talk, and is perhaps best known for his book "What to Say When You Talk to Your Self."

Helmstetter's message on positivity and self-talk is that we have the power to shape our thoughts and beliefs through the way we talk to ourselves. By focusing on positive affirmations and changing negative self-talk patterns, we can achieve greater success and fulfillment in our lives.

Dr. Troy Hall shares the message "The Power is in the I am, not some day I will be." in his book "Cohesion Culture: Proven Principles to Retain Your Top Talent".

Hall believes that when individuals feel empowered and confident, they are more likely to take ownership of their work, and to contribute positively to the workplace culture. He also suggests that leaders can play an important role in creating a culture of positivity by modeling positive self-talk and encouraging their employees to do the same.

Brené Brown cautions individuals to "Beware of the shitty first draft." We are constantly telling ourselves stories and Brown cautions us to stop and pay attention to the story we are telling ourselves in a given situation. We have the ability to rewrite the story.

If you want to cultivate a growth mindset and achieve your goals, here are some tips on how to do so:

  • Focus on the Positive

Focus on the positive aspects of a situation, rather than the negative ones. If you fail at something, instead of dwelling on your failure, focus on what you can learn from it. Ask yourself what you can do differently next time to succeed. By focusing on the positive, you can cultivate a growth mindset and see failures as opportunities for growth.

  • Embrace Challenges

Embrace challenges, and don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. When you face challenges, you are forced to learn new things and develop new skills. Challenges afford you the opportunity to improve your abilities, build resilience and boost your self confidence.

  • Keep Learning

Continuously learn and grow, even if you have achieved your goals. Learning is a lifelong process where you can always discover room for improvement. By continuing to learn and grow, you continue to feel a sense of accomplishment and purpose in life.

  • Surround Yourself with Positive People

Positive people can inspire and motivate you while providing support and encouragement. They can also help you maintain a positive outlook when your mindset starts to turn negative. Research has shown that positivity is associated with better physical and mental health. When you surround yourself with positive people, you are more likely to experience greater well-being and happiness.

  • Visualize Your Success

Visualization can increase motivation and focus. This can help you to stay on track and overcome obstacles that may arise. When you visualize yourself performing at your best, you can improve your actual performance. This is because visualization can help to improve neural pathways in the brain, which can lead to improved physical and mental performance.

When you visualize your success, you are focusing on positive outcomes and possibilities. This can help you to stay positive and optimistic, even in the face of challenges or setbacks.

On a personal note, while striving for a positive mindset, I realized that I had toxic positivity. Toxic positivity is the idea that we should always try to stay positive and avoid negative emotions or experiences, even in situations where it may not be realistic or helpful. While positivity can be a powerful tool for personal growth and well-being, toxic positivity can have some negative consequences.

I always see the positive, but I didn't allow others to feel their feelings. This denied others the opportunity to experience negative emotions such as sadness, anger or frustration which leads to repressed emotions. Repressing emotions can have negative impacts on mental and emotional well-being.

I learned that I can encourage others to not remain in negative emotions for long, while still acknowledging and validating people where they were.

The eternal optimists - DISC Personality D/I and Enneagrams 7s - have to understand that not everyone shares your natural inclination toward positivity. It can take others some time to process their emotions. While these optimistic personality types can immediately feel excited and positive about a new project, it might take their co-workers a little while to warm up to the idea.

Dealing with other people can be challenging, especially when you are naturally inclined toward positivity. However, by practicing active listening, validating emotions, offering support, and practicing empathy, you can build strong relationships with others and create a more positive and supportive environment for everyone.

The power of positive thinking is undeniable. By cultivating a growth mindset and focusing on the positive, you can achieve your goals and live a fulfilling life. Remember to embrace challenges, keep learning, surround yourself with positive people, and visualize your success. With these tips, you can cultivate a growth mindset and achieve your goals.
